Founded in 1977 by Dame Daphne Sheldrick in memory of her late husband, the legendary Tsavo warden David Sheldrick, the Trust pioneered the milk formula and hand-rearing protocols that now save orphaned elephants worldwide. Over 300 elephants have been successfully rescued, raised, and reintegrated into the wild. The nursery sits on the edge of Nairobi National Park, the only national park in the world that lies within a capital city. Each orphan, many rescued from poaching incidents, falls, or human-wildlife conflict, has a name, a personality, and a keeper who sleeps beside them for the first crucial years. The Trust is closed to the general public except for one carefully managed hour, 11:00–12:00 each day, during which the orphans are brought in for their midday milk feed and mud bath. Keepers describe each elephant’s story to visitors gathered around a rope-marked viewing area. It’s one of the most moving wildlife experiences in Africa. The Trust funds its work entirely through donations and the popular Foster-an-Elephant program; fostering for USD 50 per year unlocks an exclusive 17:00 ‘foster parents’ visit, when the orphans return for the night. Beyond rehabilitation, the Trust runs anti-poaching teams, mobile veterinary units, community outreach, and reforestation projects across Kenya, making every visit a vote for conservation.
