Meet Kenya’s eagles, owls and hawks up close on the Malindi coast

Falconry of Kenya

Falconry of Kenya is a small conservation-focused bird-of-prey center just outside Malindi, where visitors get eye-to-eye with rescued African fish eagles, owls, hawks, kestrels, and vultures, in one of the coast’s most unusual and family-loved experiences.

About Falconry of Kenya

Falconry of Kenya is a privately run bird-of-prey sanctuary on the coastal road between Malindi and Watamu. Founded to rescue, rehabilitate, and educate visitors about East Africa’s raptors, it has grown into one of Malindi’s most unique attractions a rare place in Kenya where you can stand within arm’s reach of an African fish eagle, hand-feed an owl, or watch a hawk fly to the glove. The center houses more than a dozen resident birds, most of them rescues that could not be safely returned to the wild. You may meet Verreaux’s eagle owls, African fish eagles, black kites, augur buzzards, lanner falcons, tawny eagles, and long-crested eagles, alongside a handful of vultures and smaller kestrels. Each bird has a story: an oil spill, a broken wing, a poacher’s snare, and the guides use those stories to explain the pressures facing Kenya’s raptors. A visit is guided from start to finish. Small groups walk from perch to perch as the resident falconer introduces each bird, demonstrates how the species hunts, and invites guests to hold a leather glove and receive a bird for a photograph. The sessions are unhurried, safe, and educational; kids leave able to name half a dozen East African raptors and wearing the biggest smile of the trip. Because entry fees fund food, veterinary care, and the sanctuary’s outreach program in local schools, every ticket directly supports raptor conservation on the Kenyan coast. Skynile pairs Falconry of Kenya with Gede Ruins, Watamu Marine Park or a Mida Creek boardwalk to make a full day of natural and cultural highlights just south of Malindi. The atmosphere is intimate rather than commercial: no cages of bored show birds and no scheduled ‘displays.’ Guides answer every question, encourage photography, and let each bird set the pace. For photographers, the golden hour late-afternoon light on a fish eagle’s head is worth the trip alone.

Falconry of Kenya

What to expect

Malindi Museum is the main heritage museum in Malindi, and it gives a compact introduction to the town’s maritime, Swahili, and colonial history. It is centered on the House of Columns and also oversees several nearby heritage sites, including the Vasco da Gama Pillar, the Portuguese Chapel, and the Malindi Heritage Complex.

It’s a good stop if you want more than just a beach day and are interested in the history behind the coast. Because it links several major sites under one museum system, it works well as a starting point for a Malindi heritage tour. The setting itself is also part of the appeal, since the museum sits near the seafront and old town area.
