The House of Columns and 500 years of coastal history
Housed in the elegant early-20th-century House of Columns on the Malindi seafront, this compact museum walks you through Swahili shipbuilding, Portuguese contact, coastal marine life, and the archaeology of nearby Gede.
The House of Columns was built in the early 1900s as a private residence and later became a customs office before being handed to the National Museums of Kenya. Its distinctive columned veranda facing the Indian Ocean is one of Malindi’s most photographed façades. Inside, three floors of galleries cover Mijikenda and Swahili culture, including a stunning display of vigango (carved memorial posts of the Giriama), traditional weaving, jewelry, and household items. A section on Portuguese contact contextualizes the Vasco da Gama Pillar next door. The museum’s marine gallery highlights the Malindi Marine National Park and the region’s turtle-nesting program. A curated space is dedicated to Gede Ruins with the finest ceramics and Ming coins from the site. A combined ticket (KES 500 for non-residents) covers the museum, the Vasco da Gama Pillar, and the Portuguese Chapel, making this the ideal starting point for a Malindi heritage walk.
