Where you stay on a Kenya safari changes the entire experience. The right lodge puts you in the middle of the action, sometimes literally, with hippos in the river below your deck or elephants passing the perimeter at dusk. The wrong one has you driving an hour to the nearest gate, with a room that could be anywhere. Kenya’s safari accommodation falls into three broad types: permanent lodges (fixed buildings, usually 3 to 5 star), semi-permanent tented camps (canvas walls on wooden platforms with proper beds and en-suite bathrooms), and mobile or budget camping (basic tents, shared facilities). The terminology is sometimes misleading; “tented camp” at the luxury end can mean a 60-square-meter canvas suite with a clawfoot bath, plunge pool, and butler service. We explain exactly what you are getting before you book.

The Mara has the widest range of accommodation of any Kenyan park. Inside the National Reserve itself, permanent lodges like Sarova Mara and Mara Serena offer reliable comfort and good game-viewing positions. In the adjacent conservancies, Ol Kinyei, Naboisho, Mara North, and others, exclusive tented camps operate with strict guest limits, meaning you could have a game drive with no other vehicles in sight. Conservancy camps are pricier, but they deliver a quality of experience that National Reserve lodges cannot always match during high season.
Tsavo East and West have excellent lodge options spread across the park’s 21,000 square kilometers. Satao Camp and Ashnil Aruba in Tsavo East are positioned near waterholes with predictable wildlife action. In Tsavo West, Severin Safari Camp and Kilaguni Serena sit near volcanic formations with views toward Kilimanjaro. These lodges are generally more affordable than Mara properties while still offering excellent quality.
Amboseli’s star is the view of Kilimanjaro dominating the horizon on clear mornings, and the best lodges are positioned to take full advantage. Amboseli Serena, Ol Tukai Lodge, and Kibo Safari Camp all offer direct sightlines toward the mountain, with resident elephant herds often visible from the dining areas. Rooms vary from standard lodge quality to luxury tents, and rates are generally mid-range.
Lualenyi Camp is a small, six-tent camp set inside a private ranch in the southern reaches of the Lumo Wildlife Conservancy, about 5km south of Lion’s Bluff and 32km from Mwatate town. Run since 1991 by hosts David and Christina, it trades scale for seclusion: there’s a pool at the base of a hill where game gathers through the day, simple thatched-and-canvas architecture, and a dining/lounge area that anchors the whole camp. It’s a good fit for couples and small groups after a quiet, personal safari base rather than a big-brand lodge experience.
Voyager Ziwani sits on a private conservancy on the western edge of Tsavo West National Park, its 25 tents strung along the banks of a secluded dam on the Sante River. Hippos and crocodiles are a near-constant presence right in front of camp, with over 250 recorded bird species drawn to the water. Because the camp sits on a private conservancy rather than inside the park itself, guests get access to activities the national park doesn’t allow, such as guided walking safaris and night game drives, plus proper daytime game drives into Tsavo West, a short distance away.
Samburu Game Lodge is a classic safari lodge in the Samburu National Reserve area of northern Kenya, set on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River. It has long been known for river views, a traditional safari atmosphere, and close access to Samburu’s distinctive wildlife. The lodge is located within the Samburu reserve landscape in northern Kenya, near the Uaso Nyiro/Ewaso Nyiro River, with wildlife often visible around the property. It is roughly a one-hour transfer from Samburu Airstrip, and road travel from Nairobi typically takes 5–6 hours.
