Karen Blixen’s pen name, Isak Dinesen, arrived in British East Africa in 1914 to manage a coffee farm at the foot of the Ngong Hills. Over 17 years, the farm grew to 6,000 acres, the marriage to her cousin Bror dissolved, and a complicated love affair with the English aristocrat Denys Finch Hatton became the heart of her later memoir ‘Out of Africa.’ The 1912 bungalow has been restored to its 1920s state, complete with original Blixen furniture, kitchen, library and bedrooms. The house was used in the 1985 Sydney Pollack film, and walking its rooms is a powerful step into early-20th-century Kenya. Outside, a 12-hectare garden of indigenous trees, lawns and the original farm coffee mill is a serene escape from Nairobi’s bustle. The Ngong Hills rise behind the house exactly as Blixen described them: ‘noble undulations against the African sky. ‘The National Museums of Kenya administer the site, and entry includes a 30-minute guided tour. The neighboring suburb still bears Karen’s name in her honor. Across the road, the Karen Blixen Coffee Garden restaurant serves an excellent lunch in a 1908 cottage, Skynile’s preferred lunch stop on the Karen circuit.
