Golden dunes rolling straight into the Indian Ocean
Just north of Malindi, the Mambrui Sand Dunes are a rare stretch of coastal Sahara wind-sculpted golden ridges that tumble down onto an empty white beach fronting the turquoise Indian Ocean.
Mambrui is a sleepy Swahili fishing village 20km north of Malindi across the Sabaki River. Its Great Mosque dates from the 15th century, and its ancient tombs mark its role as a stop on the medieval Swahili trade circuit, but today the village is best known for the vast golden dunes that back its beach. The dunes rise 20–30 meters and stretch for kilometers, offering the kind of clean, empty sand-sea landscape you’d expect in Namibia rather than East Africa. On the eastern side they cascade directly onto the beach so that you can crest a dune and toboggan straight into the surf. Nearby, the mouth of the Sabaki River creates seasonal wetlands that attract flamingos, pelicans, herons, and thousands of migratory shorebirds an underrated birding site paired well with the dunes. Skynile pairs the dunes with sundowners at a beach camp, sandboarding for the adventurous and, for repeat visitors, a stop at the ancient Mambrui pillar tombs.
