East Africa’s largest wood-carving cooperative

Akamba Handicraft Cooperative

Just outside Mombasa, the Akamba Handicraft Industry Cooperative gathers more than 1,500 wood carvers, weavers, and soapstone sculptors under one roof, the perfect ethical-souvenir stop.

About Akamba Handicraft Cooperative

Founded in 1963, the Akamba Handicraft Industry Cooperative Society is the largest wood-carving cooperative in Africa, gathering over 1,500 carvers, painters, weavers, and soapstone sculptors from the Akamba (Kamba) people of Kenya into one organised workshop and showroom complex. The Akamba have been Kenya’s most celebrated wood carvers since the early 20th century, with traditions traced to soldier carvers who learned during the First World War. Today their work is found in galleries and homes worldwide. A visit lets you walk through the open workshops where carvers chip salvaged hardwood into elephants, giraffes, Maasai figures, masks, and bowls. Each carver works in their own bay; you can chat with masters, watch the process, and commission custom pieces. The showroom houses thousands of finished pieces from pocket-sized animals to life-size sculptures at fair, cooperatively set prices. Soapstone and woven basketry pieces from co-op partners round out the offering. Buying here directly supports the carvers (no middlemen) and ensures provenance for export  important for buyers wanting ethical hardwood pieces under CITES rules.

Your Visit

What you'll experience

Akamba Handicraft Cooperative

What to expect

Akamba Handicraft Cooperative is one of Mombasa’s best-known places for wood carvings and handmade souvenir pieces. It is basically a working artisan cooperative, so the experience is not just shopping; you also get to see how the pieces are made and how the carvers work. People often describe the visit as part showroom, part workshop. You may see artisans carving, sanding, or finishing pieces and then walk through a display area with finished work for sale. The atmosphere is calmer than a crowded city market, and that makes it easier to look around without feeling rushed. Is it worth visiting? Yes, especially if you like crafts, cultural shopping, or want a meaningful stop beyond beaches and forts. It’s a strong choice if you want to take home something more memorable than a generic souvenir. Honestly, it sounds like one of those places where a short visit can turn into a surprisingly interesting one.
