17 kilometres of powder-white sand on Kenya’s Indian Ocean

Diani Beach

Diani Beach is Kenya’s most celebrated coastal destination, a 17-km arc of talcum-soft white sand lapped by a turquoise lagoon and ringed by palms, reefs, and colobus-filled coastal forest.

About Diani Beach

Routinely voted among Africa’s top three beaches by World Travel Awards, Diani is the headline act of Kenya’s South Coast. Its reef-protected lagoon is one of the calmest and clearest stretches of the Indian Ocean, with water temperatures between 25 and 29°C year-round and visibility that often tops 20 meters. Diani’s character lies in its blend of barefoot luxury and authentic coastal life. Five-star resorts and boutique villas line the central strip, while local beach boys still sell freshly grilled lobster from charcoal stoves at the waterline. Behind the beach, the protected coastal forest is home to the rare Angolan black-and-white colobus monkey, Sykes’ monkeys, bushbabies, and over 130 bird species. The reef offshore part of the Diani-Chale Marine Reserve is a thriving classroom for first-time snorkelers and certified divers alike. Whale sharks and humpback whales pass through between August and October, and dolphins are regularly spotted on early morning dhow cruises. Diani is also Kenya’s adventure-sports capital. Skydive Diani offers tandem freefalls with a unique reef-meets-coastline view; kitesurfing operators line the central beach during the reliable Kaskazi (Nov–Mar) and Kusi (Jun–Sep) trade winds. Camel rides at sunrise and tuk-tuk rallies down the Diani road round out the offering. Culturally, Diani sits within Mijikenda country. A short drive inland brings you to the sacred Kaya Kinondo forest, while the Chembe Cliffs and Kongo Mosque offer a glimpse of the area’s Swahili past.

Your Visit

What you'll experience

Your day in Diani typically begins with a barefoot walk to the waterline, sand so fine it squeaks underfoot. By 09:00, the lagoon is glass-flat and ideal for paddleboarding, kayaking, and snorkeling the reef just offshore.

Mid-morning, head to the Colobus Conservation Center for a 45-minute guided walk through the coastal forest. Afterwards, lunch at one of the beachside restaurants, Ali Barbour’s Cave Restaurant (a restaurant set inside a natural coral cave), is a Diani rite of passage.

Afternoons are made for adventure. Choose between a tandem skydive, a kitesurfing lesson, a camel ride along the tide line, or a guided boat trip to Kisite-Mpunguti. Sunset on a traditional dhow with sundowners closes the day in classic coastal style.
