Kisite and Marine Park excursion.
A 28 sq km marine park ringed by four small islands, Kisite-Mpunguti offers Kenya’s clearest snorkelling water, resident pods of dolphins and a slow-paced lunch on coral-built Wasini Island.
Established in 1978, Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park and Reserve is Kenya’s most successful marine conservation story. Its 28 square kilometers of reef, sea-grass and four uninhabited islands shelter green and hawksbill turtles, three resident pods of bottlenose, humpback and spinner dolphins, and one of the healthiest coral systems on the African coast. The classic visit begins with a dawn pickup from Diani and a drive south through coconut groves to Shimoni village. From here, a traditional wooden dhow under sail (or motorized twin-hull) glides out to the Mpunguti islands, where dolphins frequently bow-ride alongside. Snorkelling stops at Kisite proper reveal walls of soft and hard coral, parrotfish, angelfish, moray eels and the occasional reef shark. Visibility regularly exceeds 25m between August and March. Lunch is served Swahili-style on Wasini Island: coconut-curry crab, grilled reef fish, pilau rice, and tamarind juice at long communal tables overlooking the channel. After lunch, a guided walk through Wasini village and its raised coral gardens completes a day that consistently ranks among visitors’ favourite Kenyan experiences. The park is a refuge for the endangered humphead wrasse and home to over 250 fish species. Sea turtles nest seasonally on the smaller islands; conservation fees from each visit directly fund marine ranger patrols.

What it is: A protected marine park located between Wasini and Shimoni, famous for its coral reefs, abundant tropical fish, and regular dolphin sightings. Highlights: Snorkeling or glass-bottom boat tours around Kisite and Mpunguti islets, coral gardens, and resident dolphins. Clear, warm water with rich marine biodiversity. At Kisite reef, the dhow anchors over a sandy patch and snorkelers slip in.
