Coastal rainforest, the rare sable antelope and a thundering waterfall

About Shimba Hills & Sheldrick Falls

Shimba Hills National Reserve protects 300 sq km of coastal rainforest and grassland just inland from Diani Beach one of the largest patches of indigenous coastal forest left in East Africa. Cooler than the coast by 5–8°C, it’s a refreshing day-trip escape rich in biodiversity. The reserve is famous for its herd of sable antelope, a stunning ebony-and-white grazer found nowhere else in Kenya. Elephants uniquely habituated to coastal forest move through the reserve in family groups, and leopards, buffalo, bushbuck, baboons, and over 100 butterfly species share the habitat. The headline experience is the guided hike to Sheldrick Falls, a 25-metre cascade tumbling into a clear plunge pool in dense rainforest. The walk takes about an hour each way and is accompanied by an armed KWS ranger for safety. A cooling swim in the pool is the well-earned reward. Game drives criss-cross the high grasslands and the Pengo Hill viewpoint, which on a clear day looks all the way down to the Indian Ocean. Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary, contiguous with the reserve, offers some of Kenya’s closest roadside elephant encounters. Shimba Hills is the easiest beach-and-bush combination on Kenya’s coast, a true day trip from Diani that delivers a complete safari experience.

Your Visit

What you'll experience

Shimba Hills

What to expect

At Shimba Hills, you’ll mostly get a mix of game drives, forest scenery, and a waterfall walk rather than a classic open-plain safari. It feels cooler, greener, and a bit more relaxed than the coast below

  • Elephants are one of the main highlights, and the reserve is known for its large population.

  • You may also see buffalo, antelope, monkeys, and birds. Animals can be harder to spot because the forest is thick

  • The area is famous for sable antelope, which is described as the only place in Kenya where visitors can see them.

  • The scenery itself is a big part of the experience: rolling hills, coastal forest, misty views, and picnic stops.

Sheldrick Falls

What to expect

At Sheldrick Falls, you’ll get a guided forest hike that ends at a pretty waterfall with a natural pool at the base. It feels like a mix of exercise, shade, and a little reward at the end.

    • The walk runs through Shimba Hills’ coastal rainforest, so the trail is green, quiet, and often cooler than the coast below.

    • The falls are about 21 meters high, with mist, greenery, and a plunge pool that makes the place feel refreshing once you arrive.

    • You may spot butterflies, birds, monkeys, and sometimes elephants or other wildlife on the way.

    • Many visitors swim or at least cool off near the base of the waterfall, which is part of why people remember it so well
