From cement quarry to thriving nature reserve, rescued wildlife

Haller Park

Haller Park is the world-famous transformation of a 1971 cement quarry into a lush nature reserve where giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, antelope, monkeys, and tortoises now thrive and where you can hand-feed the giraffes.

About Haller Park

In 1971, Swiss agronomist Dr René Haller began the unlikely experiment of rehabilitating an exhausted limestone quarry behind the Bamburi Cement factory. Starting with the hardy casuarina tree, he built up soil, planted hundreds of indigenous species, and gradually attracted insects, birds, fish, and mammals. Fifty years on, Haller Park is a 75-hectare reserve and an internationally celebrated case study in ecological restoration. It hosts giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, eland, oryx, waterbuck, monkeys, tortoises, and over 160 bird species all on land that was once a bare quarry floor. Daily highlights are the giraffe feeding sessions at 11:00 and 15:00, when visitors stand on a wooden platform and offer leaves directly to the giraffes’ purple tongues. The crocodile feeding at the reptile park is a riveting (if slightly grisly) demonstration of African crocodilian power. Walking trails wind past the famous Mzee and Owen, the rescued giant tortoise and orphaned hippo who became inseparable friends and the subject of a bestselling children’s book, through butterfly pavilions, fish farms, and palm groves. A reforestation interpretation center tells the Haller story and underpins the park’s reputation as one of the most ethical wildlife experiences on the Kenyan coast.

What you'll experience

Haller Park

What to expect

Haller Park is one of Mombasa’s best nature stops, and it’s especially known because it was created from a former quarry wasteland and turned into a living ecological park. The visit is usually a mix of wildlife viewing, forest walks, and a fairly relaxed conservation experience. Haller Park is a conservation success story rather than just a regular park. What used to be damaged industrial land is now a green space with wildlife and educational value. That transformation is a big part of the experience, and honestly, it’s what makes the park stand out from many other Mombasa attractions. Is it worth it? Yes, especially if you want an easy wildlife outing without leaving the city area. It works well for families, children, and anyone who likes a slower nature experience rather than a long safari drive. If you are staying in Mombasa, it’s one of the more practical and rewarding short excursions.
