Mombasa’s beloved oceanfront promenade, palms, and sunset crowds

Mama Ngina Waterfront

A wide oceanfront park on the southern tip of Mombasa Island, Mama Ngina Waterfront is where the whole city goes to walk, picnic and watch dhows sail past at sunset.

About Mama Ngina Waterfront

Named for Kenya’s founding first lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta, Mama Ngina Waterfront is a 25-acre seafront park on Mombasa Island’s southern tip overlooking the Indian Ocean and the entrance to Kilindini Harbour. A 2019 redevelopment transformed it into one of East Africa’s most popular public spaces, with a paved promenade, lawns, palm groves, an amphitheatre, children’s play areas, food courts and a glass-walled cliff walk. Locals come at sunset to walk barefoot on the lawns, snack on grilled cassava and madafu (fresh coconut water), and watch container ships and dhows passing in and out of the harbour. Friday and weekend evenings draw thousands; the atmosphere is festive and family-friendly. Skynile’s heritage tours typically end here as the sun dips toward the Tanzanian coast. The viewing platform at the eastern end offers the best panoramic photographs of the Likoni channel and an unforgettable end to a Mombasa day. Food stalls sell everything from Swahili samosas to fresh-pressed sugarcane juice. A small concrete amphitheatre hosts occasional community concerts.

Your Visit

What you'll experience

Mama Ngina Waterfront

What to expect

Mama Ngina Waterfront is Mombasa’s big public oceanfront park, set along the Kilindini Channel with wide sea views, palm-lined walkways, gardens, and food stalls. It’s one of the most relaxed places in the city, but also one of the liveliest in the evenings and on weekends. The view is really the main attraction here. You get open ocean air, green lawns, palm trees, and a broad look across the water toward the ferry and harbor activity. At sunset, it can feel especially good not fancy, just pleasant in that easy Mombasa way. Some visitors also mention hidden beach access, old defensive features, and historic structures around the waterfront. It is generally free to enter, and the park is open daily, with long opening hours. The area was redeveloped and reopened as a modern waterfront park, and it is often described as Kenya’s first public landscaped waterfront. Because it is a public space, it works well for families, couples, and anyone who wants an easy coastal outing without paying much.
