Shimoni means ‘place of the hole’ in Kiswahili, a reference to the coral caverns that honeycomb the village’s headland. Geologically, the caves are an ancient coral system that extends 5 km inland; historically, they are a somber memorial to the East African slave trade. Between roughly 1800 and the abolition of the slave trade in 1907, captives marched from the interior and were held in these caves before being loaded onto Arab dhows bound for the slave markets of Zanzibar, Arabia, and beyond. Iron rings used to chain captives remain visible in the cave walls. Today, Shimoni Caves are protected as a national monument and managed by the local community. A 60–90 minute guided tour descends into the main chamber via a wooden staircase, where natural skylights pierce the gloom and bats roost. Local Mijikenda guides interpret the human history with care; the experience is sobering rather than sensationalized, and the small museum at the entrance contextualizes the wider East African slave trade. Most visitors combine the caves with a dhow trip to Wasini Island and Kisite Marine Park, making Shimoni a powerful counterpoint to a day on the reef.
